It’s A Man’s World
By: Pojie Pambid
This whole month of June, OUR HOME is paying homage to the man of the house, the father and the father figure by dedicating an entire theme to him – a Modern Industrial look, capturing a stylish, modish and contemporary vibe where textures, colors, finishes and furnishings come together to evoke a predominantly masculine design style.
Heading off our main focal is a living room setting inspired by the vintage look of the 1950s and the 1960s where focus is placed on a reproduction of a Charles and Ray Eames lounger and ottoman. The black tufted leather of the piece is complemented and contrasted by the richly grained wood frame that supports the back and the seat. The swivel option of the chair is highlighted through the legs in chrome while at the same time contributing to the contemporary feel of the space. To complement the iconic Eames chair, a three-seater, brown, leather, sofa takes center stage in the living room. The sofa brings to mind the comfort and the cozy appeal of a man’s cave with rich textures and an aged look to the leather. Stitching on the arms and on the back highlights the attention to detail while giving an artisanal feel to the piece. Another leather furniture piece is added to the mix, this time in the guise of an oversized, black, leather, tufted ottoman. Together, these triune of leather pieces instantly give off a masculine feel, making any guy comfortable and at home in the space. A square, low, wooden center table is placed on top of an abstract pattern area rug. The wooden grains of the table complement the rich frame of the Eames chair and makes the addition cohesive. On top, accessories are restricted to wrought and cast iron décor with autumn leaves in ceramic vases serving as centerpieces. Behind, a wooden chest of drawers serve as a back cabinet to the sofa where the same cast iron and wood accoutrements blend well. A trio of accent tables in wood and black metal elicit an industrial feel where on top, iron lanterns, copper sculptures and cacti add to the vintage yet homey feel. Plants and topiaries punctuate the setting for a touch of green. And on top, a glass and brass chandelier, evoke an elegant and nostalgic feel.
The dining room is staged with a table for six with a gray marble top and wooden legs with an accent wood panel. This piece sits on top of an area rug in similar abstract patterns making for a consistent vibe. Surrounding the table are six dining chairs designed with vintage feel with iron framing and brown leather seat pads reminiscent of the designs of Hans Wegner and Eero Saarinen – again giving off a masculine mood. Behind, a tall, wood and glass China cabinet provides a storage option for plates, napkins and other implements for dining. On both sides, chests of drawers and cabinets in a rich wood grain with iron hardware adds to the storage provisions of the space while reinforcing the industrial feel of the room. A pair of tropical palms are added for a fresh and natural feel.
The bedroom showcases a queen-sized bed in a solid, gray, leather upholstery that wraps around the frames and the headboard. A series of stitching patterns can be seen to highlight the craftsmanship while at the same time adding contemporary details. The bed is donning a set of bed linens in silk instantly projecting a classy and sleek appeal. Charcoal, rust and brown linens alternately provide a stark contrasting scheme while also giving off a trendy and stylish color combination. A matching pair of bedside tables flank the bed where table lamps with gray glass bases and gray fabric shades seamlessly blend into the color palette. Accent chairs in gray and orange are added on both sides of the bed for additional seating options in adjunct to the brown, leather love seat at the foot of the bed. Another area rug in the same abstract designs is seen underfoot for comfort and insulation.
This month, OUR HOME showcases styles and designs capturing the vintage era with industrial accents and a modern and contemporary touch. Colors and textures, accessories and décor come alive in settings and vignettes catering to the man of the house. This June, it’s definitely a man’s world….
